What is ODM?
ODM (Original Design Manufacturer) generally means the supplier develops or adapts a design around your requirements, new functions, proportions, features or appearance. Some ODM projects modify an existing platform; true new designs require engineering, tooling and longer timelines.
Best for: brands that want a more differentiated product and are prepared to invest in development and confirm who owns the resulting design.
Key questions to agree in writing
- Who owns the tooling, molds and design files?
- What is the MOQ for custom colors, logos and packaging?
- What are the one-time costs, mold, design, samples, and are they refundable?
- What is the lead time for samples, approval and mass production?
- Will your customized product be sold to competitors or kept exclusive?
A practical path
Most successful programs begin with OEM on a proven, compliant model, test the market, and only move to deeper ODM customization once sales justify it. This minimizes risk while letting you build a recognizable brand.
